Disaster Resources
Disaster Resources
If your home, property, or income has been impacted by a natural disaster, we are here to help. This guide provides steps for Kentucky Housing Corporation’s (KHC) homeowners, renters, and partners to find the assistance they need.
Immediate Steps You Should Take
- Register for Federal Disaster Assistance
This is the most important step for all individuals, homeowners, and renters.
Visit www.disasterassistance.gov or call FEMA at 800-621-3362 (for TTY calls, dial 800-642-7585).
You may be eligible for benefits and resources that are not covered by your insurance company.
This step is recommended whether or not your home is in an official disaster area, as undeclared areas can be added at a later date (you can check for declared areas with FEMA’s search tool).
- Find Local Support
For immediate needs like food, shelter, or supplies, contact:
- State or local agencies, such as your:
- State’s and county’s emergency management offices
- Department of health and human services
- Governor’s office
- Non-profits and other organizations may be willing to assist you as well. Here are some well-known organizations and their information:
- Red Cross: Visit the Get Help section of their website or call 1-800-RED-CROSS.
- United Way: Visit the 211 section of their website or call 2-1-1.
- Salvation Army: Visit the Disaster Relief section of their website.
- KHC also has a list of resources available on our Community Resource Guide [LINK, ] that may be able to help.
- You can also find resources at www.fema.gov/locations by entering your city and state or ZIP code. Select “Helpful Resources” once your state’s page appears. USA.gov also provides links to local resources.
- Claims and Damage
- Contact your insurance provider and provide details of the damage and loss sustained due to the disaster.
- Document damage before making repairs. Keep photos and videos for your records.
- If your insurance covers your loss, an adjuster will be assigned. The adjuster will work with you to assess the property damage and provide an estimate of the repair costs.
Depending on your situation, we suggest you take the following steps.
KHC Homeowners
This information only applies to KHC homeowners.
- Apply for Mortgage Assistance
If your home or income was impacted, contact KHC to discuss a Disaster Forbearance Plan. This assistance may include payment relief, suppression of negative credit reporting, and no late fees.
Don’t forget to update your contact information if you’ve been temporarily relocated so we can keep in touch with you during this difficult time.
- File Your Insurance Claim
Contact your homeowner’s insurance provider immediately. Document your losses and conversations with your provider. - Understand Claim Checks
Your insurance company may issue an insurance claim check, which can also be called loss draft funds. A claim check is meant to cover various costs, including repairs.
If you receive an insurance claim check under $15,000 and your account is current, please contact Mortgage Servicing to schedule an appointment to obtain KHC’s endorsement on the check.
Renters
- Contact Your Landlord
Your first step is to contact your property manager or landlord to report all damage to your unit. - File Your Insurance Claim
If you have renter’s insurance, contact your provider immediately. Document your losses and conversations with your provider. - Report Your Status to KHC
If you are receiving assistance through one of KHC’s rental assistance programs and have been displaced or your unit is damaged, please contact your KHC representative immediately.
- Apply for Renter Assistance
Remember to register with FEMA. Assistance for renters can cover personal property loss and temporary housing.
Partners (Landlords, Developers, etc.)
- Report Property Damage
If your KHC-funded property has sustained damage, please contact your representative in KHC's Multifamily Programs or Asset Management department to report the situation. - Support Your Tenants
Please direct your tenants to apply for FEMA assistance and contact local support services (Red Cross, 211) for their immediate needs. - Insurance and Compliance
Review your property's insurance policy and disaster plan. KHC may issue specific guidance regarding compliance reporting based on the disaster's severity.
Beware of Scams
Scammers may try to take advantage of you in your time of need.
Be cautious of anyone posing as a non-profit or government official asking you for money. Home repair scams and price gouging efforts also increase significantly after natural disasters. Always get multiple offers from contractors and get agreements in writing.
