Don't Get Scammed When Applying For Rental Assistance
Recently, a number of states around the country were hit with scams targetting those seeking public housing through the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV, also known as Section 8) program. Malicious entities posing as official state housing agencies have been targeting applicants by setting up fake accounts and sites, claiming the HCV Waiting List is open, and asking for personal information. The solicited information could be used to steal the identity of applicants and/or access bank and other personal accounts.
Individuals seeking public housing are urged to be vigilant and to verify the legitimacy of any website or social media account claiming to offer information or applications for HCV/Section 8 housing. To protect the safety and the security of your personal information, please follow these guidelines:
- Apply only on KHC's website at kyhousing.org.
Never provide your Social Security Number, personal information, or any financial details on unofficial websites or social media platforms. (Please note that KHC's HCV Waiting List is currently closed and not open to applications.)
- Never give out banking info.
KHC will never ask for this during the Waiting List application process and housing authorities do not charge a fee to apply for the HCV program. - When in doubt, contact us!
If you think an email, post, or call from KHC is suspicious, please call 502-564-9946 or email hcvwaitinglist@kyhousing.org.
These Section 8 scams make it more difficult to apply for public housing, but you can keep your personal information safe when applying. KHC encourages applicants to get information and apply only through KHC's website. And please remain vigilant.
