Section 8 Rental Assistance Program

Bookmark and Share
What is the Section 8 Rental Assistance Program and how do I apply?

This federal program was created to help eligible participants rent safe, quality, and sanitary housing. The U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides funding and guidelines that you must follow.

How does the waiting list work?

To get started, you will need to complete the preapplication that will be available when the list is accepting applications.

Kentucky Housing will send you a letter when your name reaches the top of the waiting list.  When you receive this letter you will need to contact one of our offices (a name and phone number will be included in the letter) to notify us of your continued interest in the program.

What happens after I call to confirm my interest in receiving rental assistance?

Your contact person will mail paperwork to you to be completed and returned in order to determine your eligibility.  If you are eligible, we will schedule an appointment for you with a Kentucky Housing staff member who will explain the program and issue you a voucher.

What can I expect during the application process?

When this happens

expect this.

Complete the preapplication on KHC's Web site
or print a hard copy and mail it to KHC using the instructions contained on the preapplication.

If you complete the preapplication online, KHC's Web site shows a thank you message when the pre-application is submitted.  You will also receive an e-mail confirmation.

Your preapplication enters KHC's system to be processed in the order it was received.

If you completed the preapplication online, right away, you will receive an e-mail confirmation that the pre-application was received.

Within a few weeks, your preapplication is processed, and you are placed on KHCs waiting list.

Your wait begins.

If you move or change your address while on the waiting list, KHC needs to know right away.

Application materials must be kept up-to-date so KHC may contact you.  Send and changes in writing to KHC, Attention:  Wait List, 1231 Louisville Road, Frankfort, Kentucky 40601.

Your name reaches the top of the waiting list.

KHC mails you a letter asking if you still need Section 8 rental assistance.  If you are still in need, follow the instructions to confirm.

A KHC staff member is assigned to work with you.

Your KHC contact person sends you paperwork and a detailed application.  Complete these and return them to KHC.

Your eligibility to receive Section 8 rental assistance will be verified based on current guidelines.

If you are eligible, KHC will schedule an appointment with you and a KHC staff member will explain the program and issue your voucher.

Please refer to the contact information for the county you live in.
